Experience Highlights
For almost 30 years, Mark's practice has been concentrated in complex commercial litigation and claim-related matters, principally in the fields of reinsurance law, reinsurance and insurance coverage, complex insurance and reinsurance claim analysis, insurance insolvencies, run-offs and commutations. He has extensive experience in the area of reinsurance contracts, claims and disputes, and he counsels several of the world's leading cedents, reinsurers and retrocessionaires in this field. He regularly serves as lead trial counsel for foreign and domestic insurers and reinsurers in major insurance and reinsurance coverage matters throughout the United States and internationally, including both litigations and arbitrations.
Legal Expertise
Mark Joined KFP in January 2009 as co-head of the firm's reinsurance practice after spending his entire career at a large Chicago-based general practice firm, where he was a senior partner in that firm's insurance and reinsurance practice . He has served as trial counsel in complex securities, class action and legal malpractice litigation. He has provided counsel to insurers in the fields of professional liability, general and products liability, bad faith, toxic tort, asbestos and environmental claims. He has counseled reinsurers in property, casualty and life reinsurance as well as surety reinsurance. Mark has been involved in insurance product development, drafted many insurance and reinsurance contract documents, supervised insurance and reinsurance claim reviews, and managed a variety of liability claim programs. He has briefed and argued appeals in insurance and reinsurance cases in various jurisdictions.
Education and Achievements
Mark earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University in 1977, and a Juris Doctor degree from Emory Law School in 1980. A frequent lecturer on reinsurance topics, Mark is a member of the faculty of Robert W. Strain's Reinsurance and Contract Wording Textbook Training Course, one of the world's leading reinsurance study courses . Mark is a member of the AIDA-U.S. Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Society (ARIAS-U.S.) and has participated as a member of the faculty at conferences sponsored by the Society. He is admitted to practice in Illinois, in various U.S. District Courts and Circuit Courts of Appeals, and has been admitted to practice pro hac vice in state courts throughout the United States.
